EVENT NOW OVER
Here’s a workshop that hits all the right notes: sustainable art-making, musical inspiration, and a one-of-a-kind creation you’ll actually use every day. Welcome to Time & Tempo, where we’re transforming vintage vinyl records into working clocks that are equal parts art piece and functional timekeeper.
Created by the ingenious team at Curate – Perth’s champions of sustainable arts – this workshop combines our love of recycling with our adoration of music into an experience you won’t find anywhere else. You’ll receive a vinyl LP (rescued from the donation bin and given glorious new life) plus paint pens and all the clock mechanism pieces you need. Then comes the fun part: designing your LP with whatever inspires you. Abstract patterns, musical lyrics, homages to your favourite artists, geometric designs, personal memories connected to music – this is your canvas, your vision, your time to create.
Taking place alongside the gallery’s A Day with David photography exhibition, this workshop celebrates themes of transformation, creativity and artistic evolution. While you work on your unique timepiece, enjoy a curated playlist of David Bowie tunes that echoes the exhibition’s exploration of artistic authenticity and creative reinvention. Plus, light refreshments and snacks are included to keep your creative energy flowing!
Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or you’ve never picked up a paint pen before, our facilitators will guide you through the process with warmth and encouragement. Work at your own pace, chat with fellow creators, and watch your functional artwork come to life. By the end of the session, you’ll walk away with a truly unique timepiece that tells a story: rescued vinyl, creative vision, and the magic of making something beautiful from something discarded.
Perfect for date nights, creative catch-ups with friends, solo creative time, or treating yourself to a few hours of mindful making. All materials provided – just bring your creativity and your love of sustainable art!
Reduce. Reuse. Reimagine. Create.

Extra things to know
This workshop is led by Patricia Alessi and the team at Curate, an independent multi-disciplinary non-profit arts organisation founded in 2019. Curate’s philosophy centres on creating thoughtful, thought-provoking arts experiences with innovative approaches that positively impact communities. Their signature focus on sustainable arts has earned them acclaim, including their award-winning Recycle Instrument Project.
Patricia Alessi herself is a remarkably accomplished artist and educator. Beyond her musical credentials (Australia’s first and only Certified McClosky Voice Technician, ABC Classics producer, Performance Expert for the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions), she’s deeply committed to community arts and sustainability. As a person with significant lived experience of disability, Patricia brings inclusive, accessible teaching approaches to all her workshops. She currently serves as a Peer Assessor for Creative Australia and Regional Arts Australia, and Grant Assessor for Regional Arts WA.
Curate’s motto says it all: they love the weird and wonderful and everything in between, and they’re dedicated to pushing boundaries to create exciting programs with innovative, industry-leading approaches that prioritise community connection and environmental responsibility.
The workshop takes place at Joondalup Contemporary Art Gallery, found on Boas Avenue, Joondalup – right next to Joondalup Library and the Council Chambers. It’s just a 5-minute walk from Joondalup Train Station with free parking available in surrounding streets and nearby public car parks, including Boas Avenue and Grand Boulevard. Multiple bus routes service the Joondalup CBD, including free CAT services.
The workshop is held in the gallery’s workshop, located just around the corner from the exhibition space – there will be signs to point you in the right direction.
The venue is small but wheelchair accessible with wide doorways and level floors.
The activity involves fine motor skills (using paint pens) and some manual dexterity for assembling clock mechanisms, though facilitators will provide assistance and adaptations as needed to ensure all participants can create successfully.
Vintage vinyl LP (rescued from donation bins), paint pens in multiple colours, clock mechanism and hands, all assembly materials and tools, expert facilitation and guidance throughout, tips for caring for your finished clock, light refreshments, snacks, and a curated David Bowie playlist.
At the end of the workshop, you’ll take home your completed working vinyl clock (allow 24 hours for paint to fully cure before hanging or displaying).
Music lovers, sustainability advocates, craft enthusiasts, people seeking unique home decor, gift-makers (these clocks make incredible personalised gifts), date night couples, solo creative explorers, anyone interested in upcycling and circular economy practices.
Absolute beginners welcome! No artistic or crafting experience necessary – facilitators guide you through every step.
This workshop takes place during the A Day with David photography exhibition, creating a thematic link between Bowie’s artistic transformation and your own creative reinvention of vintage vinyl.
All vinyl records used in this workshop are rescued from donation bins and op shops – records that would otherwise end up in landfill are given beautiful new life as functional art. This workshop embodies Curate’s commitment to sustainable arts practices and creative reuse.
This workshop is designed to be relaxed, social, and supportive. It’s about creative exploration and mindful making, not perfection. Participants are encouraged to share music memories and favourite albums while working, creating a warm community atmosphere.
