Resistance and Resilience

An exhibition of dynamic and varied ceramic forms

Influenced by the natural habitats of Joondalup, Resistance and Resilience explores the ecological impact of single-use objects on the environment, objects that are embedded into our contemporary way of living.

Using a combination of hand-building, coiling and slip-casting ceramic techniques, artist Rosemary Helmis constructs ceramics that create a tension between the natural habitats of Joondalup and the accumulation of single-use items and their impact on the environment.

The materiality of the ceramics speaks to both the fragility of the natural environment and the textures found within it while simultaneously exploring the resilience of the environment from human impact.

Extra things to know
About the artist

Rosemary Helmis is a local artist who works in a range of ceramics techniques and processes.

Through her practice, the Helmis raises questions about the social, political and cultural issues of our time. Front and centre to these explorations are concerns about unsustainable day-to-day practices that have significant impact on the environment.

Helmis’ recent work demonstrates an interest in using everyday mundane objects. The objects are decontextualised and manipulated through ceramic processes to take on a new life as art objects.

Where to go

You’ll find this exhibition on the main floor of Joondalup Library. Turn right when you get to the reception desk and head to the southeast corner near the window. If you see a plane hanging from the ceiling, you’re going the right way!
